Coding for the Web Project

During my BA in User Experience Design, I worked on a project that explored the increasing digital overload users face in today’s digital culture and the impact it’s having on our mental well-being. This project was created in response to a unit brief called “Coding for the Web”, in which the final concept outcome had to be coded. The final project concept involved experimenting and iterating on the idea using HTML, CSS and JavaScript in Visual Studio Code.

The core concept was to give users a visual representation of how they are constantly bombarded with phone notifications in everyday life, raising awareness of digital overload and its impact on mental well-being. An important aspect of the concept was also to highlight how frequent notifications trigger small bursts of dopamine, reinforcing compulsive checking behaviours and perpetuating an endless cycle. To communicate this, I used JavaScript to create a shaking phone animation, symbolising the persistent pull of digital alerts and the sense of physical urgency they generate for users.

I then booked a call with LCC’s Creative Technology Lab to receive feedback on my code. Based on their suggestions, I iterated on the JavaScript to make the notifications feel sharper and more responsive, ensuring the interaction aligned more closely with my final concept and intended user experience.
